One Perfume 1000 Fragrance Products UI Student Innovation Utilizes Natural Language Processing and Generative Ai (Gpt-4)

UI students won the L’Oréal Indonesia Brandstorm 2023 competition thanks to an innovative product in the form of perfume in one package with 1000 types of scents they wanted. As champions, their next step is to compete in Europe. This innovative product is the result of research by three students from the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (DTE FTUI) who are members of the Cakrawala Team.

They introduced the Personalized Perfumery System (PERFY) application by utilizing Artificial Intelligence (AI) which can provide recommendations for perfumes or fragrances that suit the needs of its users, anytime and anywhere. The Cakrawala team consists of Alvin Filipi (DTE 2019), Julieta Hermawan (DTE 2019), and Evelyn Velencia Febita (DTE 2020).

In designing this idea, the team was under the guidance of a DTE FTUI Biomedical Engineering Study Program lecturer, namely Dr. Eng. Mia Rizkinia, S.T., M.T. and Siti Fauziyah Rahman, S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D. Thanks to their innovative ideas, the Cakrawala Team succeeded in becoming the National Winner of Indonesia L’Oréal Brandstorm 2023, which was announced on Wednesday (29/03) and succeeded in eliminating more than 1,600 students from other universities in Indonesia.

“This idea stems from research results which reveal that 85% of people want to look good when they are outside. Many have more than one perfume collection with different scents for different occasions. We thought of making one perfume application that can produce different scents. different depending on the user’s choice. We then initiated PERFY, which is a system that combines digital technology and physical fragrance formulations to offer a more complete fragrance system to users. PERFY has two advantages, namely in terms of applications and devices that are also friendly for friends with disabilities, said Dr. Eng. Mia Rizkinia.

PERFY App is an application that harnesses the generative power of AI to offer its users a unique and personalized fragrance experience, anytime and anywhere by leveraging Natural Language Processing (NLP) and Generative AI (GPT-4).

“Using this application is very easy. First, users can open the application and click on the Make My Personalized Scent feature in the initial view. Second, answer questions to determine your profile. Third, provide detailed information about yourself to find out the perfume you need. Fourth, a wide selection of perfume fragrances will be displayed to suit your needs,” said Evelyn.

PERFY is a fragrance-mixing device with the Internet-of-Things Ecosystem. It has three advantages, namely the 1000-IN-1 Fragrance Mixer which is connected via Bluetooth to the PERFY Application and has extraction of up to 1,000 kinds of aromas, the product is free from animal testing and is environmentally friendly, and the device is easy to carry and is equipped with a push button spray that is wider.

PERFY also has an inclusiveness mode, which is an AI-powered navigation mode that utilizes Computer Vision (CV) technology and a hands-free mode that will help interact with the device without physically touching it. Of course, this mode is very friendly for people who have physical limitations. “The Cakrawala team consists of creative and hardworking students. Within a month, amidst their busy thesis, design projects, and internships, they offer a different idea than the others. The idea carries the value of inclusivity and feasibility with a GUI that can reach friends with disabilities by eye tracker technology, speech recognition, and NLP for personalized perfumed so they can win the national championship. Good luck at the Asian and world level later,” said Dr. Eng. Mia Rizkinia.

As the National Winner of Indonesia L’Oréal Brandstorm 2023, the Cakrawala Team will later represent Indonesia at the L’Oréal Brandstorm 2023 at the international level. “During April we will take part in an online hackathon facilitated directly by L’Oréal Indonesia. Later, it is hoped that we will be able to finalize this idea for the semifinals of the competition in May. Then, in June there will be an international final which will be held in Paris, France. “We hope that full support will come from all FTUI and UI academics so that we can win and make FTUI, UI and Indonesia proud on the international stage,” said Alvin.

As a form of appreciation and support from FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU said, “This is a breakthrough idea that needs to be fully supported by all FTUI academics, UI, and also the Indonesian people. The collaboration of Electrical Engineering and Biomedical Engineering students proves that these two fields of knowledge can create product ideas that are solutive for the community. Hopefully, this idea will continue to be developed so that later it can be implemented into a good product for the community. Good luck on the international stage, full support from FTUI always accompanies the journey of the three DTE FTUI students,” he said.

L’Oréal Brandstorm 2023 is an annual competition that has been held in Indonesia since 2009 by L’Oréal as the largest cosmetics company in the world. This year, the theme raised is Crack the New Codes of Beauty, in which participants must collaborate on technology and beauty, through Augmented Reality (AR), Virtual Reality (VR), Artificial Intelligence (AI), and Metaverse. The L’Oréal Brandstorm International level competition has been held since 1992, to find talents to identify Future Leaders from L’Oréal. Already more than 7000 students have been positively affected by this competition.

In the project carried out by the Cakrawala Team, technology is the main tool and has an important role. The idea of the Cakrawala Team by collaborating on digital technology and physical fragrances turns out to be participating in realizing the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In the SDGs, technology is an important pillar to build a more prosperous society. In line with this, PERFY is a product related to point 9 of the SDGs, namely Industry Innovation and Infrastructure, because PERFY utilizes technology to support the development of the Global Beauty Industry, in this case, a product from L’Oréal.
