Predicting Materials to Virus Inhibitors, Three FTUI Students Present Machine Learning Applications at the International Dynamics Days Asia Pacific 2024

Three students from the Department of Metallurgy and Materials Engineering (DTMM) at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), had the honour of presenting their research at the prestigious international event, Dynamics Days Asia Pacific 13 (DDAP 13). This event is part of the long-term workshop Frontiers in Non-equilibrium Physics 2024, held at the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics (YITP), Kyoto University, Japan, from July 1-5, 2024. The three students are Yossi Andreano (2020), Anggit Driasaditya (2020), and Rio Sudwitama Persadanta Kaban (2021), under the guidance of DTMM FTUI lecturer, Dr. Ir. Jaka Fajar Fatriansyah, M.Sc., IPM, ASEAN ENG.

On this occasion, the three students presented one of the DDAP 13 topics, namely machine learning. Machine learning is a branch of artificial intelligence that allows computers to learn from data and make predictions or decisions without being explicitly programmed. Yossi Andreano presented his research on predicting the mechanical, electrical, and thermal properties of copper alloys based on composition and processing using machine learning. Anggit Driasaditya discussed the utilization of machine learning for predicting the docking score of Quinazoline derivatives as Hepatitis B virus inhibitors. Rio Sudwitama explained the prediction of tensile strength, hardness, and melting point of nickel-based and iron-nickel-based superalloys based on composition using machine learning.

“This workshop also provides an opportunity for cross-disciplinary collaboration. The discussions held not only deepened our understanding of physics and materials engineering but also integrated machine learning concepts into practical application contexts. We gained deep insights into how this technology can be applied in current materials science research,” said Yossi.

Anggit and Rio added that the opportunity they received at this event increased their motivation to realize the importance of physics as a key aspect in the development of materials science. “Speakers from various universities offered diverse perspectives, enhancing the value of each presentation session we attended. This motivated us to develop new ideas and apply the knowledge we gained to advance our research in the future,” they said.

On a separate occasion, the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, stated, “The host of DDAP 13, the Yukawa Institute for Theoretical Physics, is a renowned institute dedicated to Japan’s first Nobel laureate, Hideki Yukawa. Several participants in this workshop are also known as Nobel laureates and recipients of other prestigious international awards. The participation of FTUI students in this prestigious event not only brings prestige to the Faculty of Engineering and Universitas Indonesia on a global stage but also provides a platform for students to broaden their horizons and international networks.”

Held since 1999, Dynamics Days Asia Pacific is an international workshop held every two years focusing on nonlinear dynamics. This year, DDAP covers several topics, including non-equilibrium systems, quantum systems, condensed matter, photonics, biotechnology, climate, and machine learning. The workshop invites expert speakers from renowned universities in Asia such as the National University of Singapore, Tohoku University, and Peking University.
