ProfCast FTUI Episode 13: Get to Know More about Protocol Engineering

ProfCast FTUI episode 13 presents another special guest. This episode presents a Professor of the Department of Electrical Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (DTE FTUI), Prof. Dr. Ir. Riri Fitri Sari MM. MSc. Hosted by Prof. Dr. Ir. Hendri D.S. Budiono, M.Eng., Prof. Riri discussed the use of the Internet.

Currently, the use of the Internet has increased, based on the survey results of the Indonesian Internet Service Providers Association (APJII), internet users in Indonesia reached 215.63 million people in the period 2022-2023. Proving that the internet has coexisted with society. The use of the internet is closely related to the existence of Protocol Engineering.

According to Prof. Riri, who is also a Professor of DTE FTUI, Protocol Engineering is the application of systematic methods for the development of communication protocols, using many software engineering principles. “In addition, the internet also has 7 layers that are useful to maximize the use of the internet, especially to explain how computer network communication can be carried out efficiently and interpretability between different systems. The 7 layers of the internet are physical, data connection, network, transport, session, presentation, and application.”

Prof. Riri also said that in addition to the 7 layers of the internet, there is now the term blockchain, which is an advanced database mechanism that allows the transparent sharing of information in business networks. A blockchain database stores data in blocks that are linked together in a chain. Data is chronologically consistent because it cannot be changed.

Blockchain is becoming an innovative new technology and is usually widely used by various industries, such as energy companies that use blockchain technology to create peer-to-peer energy trading platforms, financial companies that use blockchain services to manage payments, accounts, and online market trading, media and entertainment companies, which use blockchain systems to manage copyright data, and retail companies that use blockchain to track the movement of goods between suppliers and buyers.

On a separate occasion, the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU gave his response that “The development of the internet is currently increasing, as evidenced by the many communication protocols that can facilitate various aspects of life. Self-readiness in facing the flow of the internet must begin to be improved from now on because in the future the internet will dominate various aspects of life. FTUI is also committed to always improving the quality of education to keep up with the times, one of which is by modernizing education,” he said.
