Public Lecture in Future Energy TSE UI: Advancing a Sustainable Energy Transition

The Master’s Program in Energy Systems Engineering (TSE), Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), held a public lecture titled Beyond Powering Indonesia: Driving Sustainability in Energy, Climate, and Inclusive Growth”. The event took place on April 23 at the Makara 04 Smart Meeting Room, FTUI Dean’s Building, and was attended by 57 TSE students, most of whom were part of the special class in collaboration with PT PLN (Persero).

The keynote speaker, Kamia Handayani, Executive Vice President for Energy Transition and Sustainability at PLN, delivered an in-depth presentation on the urgency of energy transition in addressing the realities of the global climate crisis. Kamia emphasized that climate change is no longer a threat of the future but a present-day challenge, already manifested through natural disasters, droughts, and ecological disruptions.

“PLN is not only committed to reducing carbon emissions but also to ensuring social and economic sustainability. Our approach is a just energy transition that ensures no one is left behind, especially workers in the fossil fuel-based energy sector,Kamia stated.

PLN has developed the Accelerated Green Energy Development strategy, which includes advancing renewable energy, developing transmission infrastructure, developing energy storage technologies, and exploring future technologies such as hydrogen and nuclear power. This initiative supports the national target of achieving net-zero emissions by 2060.

This public lecture is part of a regular series of events hosted by TSE FTUI, which previously included the Future Energy Talk (FET) and various seminar series featuring national and international speakers from industry, government, and academia.

“Through forums like these, we hope students will not only gain technical knowledge but also understand the energy transition’s policy, social, and economic dimensions. Students need to be prepared to become change agents in the journey toward national sustainability, said Prof. Dr. Ir. Widodo Wahyu Purwanto, DEA, Head of the Interdisciplinary Engineering Research Unit, FTUI.

In his opening remarks, the Dean of FTUI, Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., expressed his appreciation for the ongoing collaboration between FTUI and PLN in supporting the energy transition agenda.FTUI fully supports strategic programs that connect students, industry, and policymakers. Initiatives like this show that a university is not just a place for learning. Still, also a space for dialogue and innovation that directly contributes to sustainable national development, stated Prof. Kemas.

Through this event, FTUI reaffirms its commitment as a leading engineering education institution actively addressing future energy challenges and continuously encouraging student involvement in developing innovative and inclusive solutions.
