SFPE UI x PT Hilti Indonesia Organizes Seminar & Discussion to Increase Fire Safety Awareness in Buildings

The Student Chapter of the Society of Fire Protection Engineers (SFPE) Universitas Indonesia (UI) in collaboration with PT Hilti Indonesia organized a Seminar and Panel Discussion to launch the book “Firestopping in Buildings”. Located in Makara 04 Smart Meeting Room FTUI, this activity aims to increase understanding of innovation and fire safety in buildings.

The event was opened by Dr. Muhamad Sahlan, S.Si., M.Eng., Head of FTUI’s Entrepreneurship and Innovation Unit, who conveyed the importance of joint efforts in understanding and applying the latest fire safety technologies to ensure better building safety.

At this seminar, two speakers who are experts in the field of fire safety presented two important themes. The first speaker, Prof. Ir. Yulianto S. Nugroho, M.Sc., Ph.D., FTUI Professor in the field of Fire Safety Engineering gave a presentation on the importance of fire safety and fire prevention efforts. “In buildings, the risk of fire is always lurking. Therefore, the fire protection system is a crucial aspect in achieving building safety,” said Prof. Yulianto.

Furthermore, he gave a brief introduction to fire, the combustion process, and smoke by-products, as well as their effects on life, property, and asset safety. In addition, Prof. Yulianto also explained the strategic elements of creating fire safety in buildings, including the selection and use of construction materials, fire detection, fire suppression, smoke management, compartmentation, structural integrity, fire suppression facilities, and fire safety management systems.

The second speaker was Dana Luthfi Ilmansyah, Codes and Approval Manager of PT Hilti Indonesia. Dana Luthfi gave a presentation on compartmentation as a form of passive protection in fire safety. Dana explained that fire protection systems do not only rely on reliable active protection but must also be complemented by adequate passive protection systems to create holistic and effective fire protection.

“Passive fire protection systems aim to contain a fire to an area and slow down its spread. Some examples of passive fire protection systems include fire compartment walls, fire escape routes, fireproof ceilings, air drying vents, smoke barriers, fire retardants at penetration, and others,” said Dana.

Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU said, “In this ever-evolving era, a deep understanding of innovation and fire safety in buildings is essential. FTUI students need to actively explore new knowledge, integrate it with the latest technology, and make safety a priority in every stage of design and construction. That way, innovative buildings not only provide progress but also protect lives and assets to the fullest.”

The seminar was followed by a discussion session with six panellists related to fire engineering in buildings. The discussion covered various issues, technologies, and law enforcement related to fire safety in buildings. Through this opportunity, SFPE UI and PT Hilti Indonesia hope to provide new insights for participants and increase awareness of the importance of fire safety aspects in buildings.

The event was attended by Budi Haryono, S.Sos., M.Ec.Dev. (Head of Prevention Division of DKI Jakarta Fire and Rescue Agency), Reza Adyanto Nugroho, S.T. (President of SFPE UI), Abhishek K Rajput (General Manager of PT Hilti Indonesia), Harfan Sakti, S.T., M.T. (Head of Fire Safety Supervision Subgroup), Satria Ramadhan (Senior Facade Engineer of BFG), Ir. Nugraha Budi Raharja (Building Science Center of the Ministry of PUPR), and Fahri Ali Imran (CEO of Ignis Fire Risk).
