Smart City Logistics is a Solution for City Sustainability and Urban Transport System

Prof. Dr. Ir. Nahry, M.T. was inaugurated as a Professor in the Science of Goods Transportation, Faculty of Engineering (FT) Universitas Indonesia (UI). The inauguration ceremony led by UI Rector, Prof. Ari Kuncoro, S.E., M.A., Ph.D., was held at Makara Art Center, UI Depok Campus, on Wednesday (1/11). Prof Nahry was inaugurated as a professor after delivering a scientific oration entitled “Smart City Logistics: Solutions for City Sustainability and Urban Transport Systems”.

In his speech, Prof. Nahry said that growing urbanisation, rising incomes, and the development of e-commerce have accelerated the movement of goods in Indonesia, putting pressure on supply chains and logistics in cities. However, conventional methods of managing supply chains, logistics and transportation are no longer up to the challenge and new approaches and technologies are needed to modernise city logistics sustainably.

“Various city logistics solutions have been developed by various cities in the world, which can be grouped into seven policy groups, namely solutions related to supply management, demand management, infrastructure, use of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) and Intelligent Transport System (ITS), environmentally friendly vehicles, public and private collaboration, and reverse logistics. The goal of these solutions is the sustainability of city logistics in environmental, economic, and social aspects,” said Prof Nahry.

Prof Nahry critically reviewed existing city transport solutions. According to him, the Supply Chain Based Network approach is an important approach to consider in city logistics planning and logistics networks generally involve many cities. Therefore, city logistics planning requires a network system approach that integrates all points in the system. This approach requires identifying the supply chain of each major commodity and mapping the points of production, consumption, and logistics activities to facilitate the flow of goods from the point of origin to the point of destination.

Furthermore, Prof Nahry emphasised that the city’s freight transport system is also unlikely to rely on the highway mode using trucks, given that public transport and freight transport must share road capacity. On the other hand, for reasons of urban sustainability, it is not possible to continue adding road infrastructure capacity. Therefore, it is necessary to shift the mode of goods transport from trucks to rail or sea modes. In this case, the use of rail or sea modes is within the framework of the intermodal transport system of the long-distance supply chain system.

Cooperation between the government and business entities in city logistics is considered to be an important component. Looking at the situation in Indonesia, city governments as facilitators, regulators and integrators of the national logistics system need to pay more attention to structuring the city logistics system through smart planning and smart technology. This can be done using various city logistics management practices such as Parcel locker services, drone delivery, Internet of Things (IoT) and Crowd Logistics.

Meanwhile, logistics managers in private companies as the main actors of urban goods transport operations also need to implement Green Logistics in the company through the concept of eco-driving for truck drivers. According to Prof Nahry, this can provide financial benefits to the company through fuel savings and reduction of potential accidents. To increase motivation, the government can provide appreciation for companies that implement Green Logistics, which can then also improve the company’s reputation.

Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU said, “In his speech, Prof. Nahry discussed issues that are very relevant and urgent in the context of rapid urbanisation development in Indonesia and around the world. The concept of “Smart City Logistics” is a much-needed approach to dealing with the complex challenges of city mobility and goods transport in the modern era. This research helps us to better understand how technology, data and innovation can be used to optimise city transport, reduce congestion, mitigate environmental impacts and improve overall sustainability.”

Before conducting studies on urban sustainability and urban transport systems, Prof Nahry has conducted many similar studies. Some of them are The Integrated Strategic Planning of Multimodal Freight Transport Network Under Infrastructure Budget Limitation (2023); Speed Heterogeneity and Accident Reduction in Mixed Traffic (2023); and Model Development of Ride Splitting Service with Resource Sharing Scheme on Ride Sourcing (Online Taxi) Services in Jakarta (2021).

Prof. Dr. Ir. Nahry, M.T., completed his Bachelor of Civil Engineering at the Universitas Indonesia in 1988; completed his Master of Civil Engineering at the Universitas Indonesia in 1997; and obtained his Doctorate of Civil Engineering at the Universitas Indonesia in 2011. In 2023, Prof Nahry received the Satyalancana Karya Satya 30 Years Award from the President of the Republic of Indonesia. Currently, he serves as Head of the Finance Division of the FTUI Civil and Environmental Engineering Service and Community Service Unit (UP2M).

Prof Nahry’s inauguration ceremony was also attended by FT Professor of Universitas Gadjah Mada, Prof. Dr Ir. Agus Taufik Mulyono, MT, IPU, ASEAN.Eng, and Prof. Dr. Techn. Ir. Danang Parikesit, M.Sc., IPU, ASEAN.Eng.; Professor of FT Tarumanegara University, Prof. Ir. Leksmono Suryo Putranto, M.T, Ph.D.; President Director of PT Austindo Nusantara, Mohammad Fitriyansyah; and Chairman of the Indonesian Security and Safety Association (KAMSELINDO), Dr. Kyatmaja Lookman, BCom., S.H., M.B.A., Ak.
