SPE UI SC and FTUI Host MEDCO in Skill Finder Seminar

On Tuesday (May 21), the Society of Petroleum Engineers Universitas Indonesia Student Chapter (SPE UI SC) in collaboration with the Faculty of Engineering Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) invited PT Medco Energi Internasional to a seminar titled Skill Finder: Interview Simulation 2024. The event was held in the Smart Meeting Room, Dean’s Building FTUI, from 1 PM until the end. The event was attended by the team from FTUI Career Development Center (CDC FTUI), the President of SPE UI SC 2024, M Kahfi Arifiansyah, and a speaker from Medco, Mr. Shauqi G. Aleyandra, Senior HR Shared Services.

In the main session, Mr. Shauqi delivered his presentation titled Unlocking Oil and Gas Career Opportunities. He began by introducing the company where he works. Medco, established in 1980, started its business in drilling and now operates in three fields: oil & gas, power, and energy.

Business trends are moving very quickly. The first trend is AI, which has become part of our daily lives. There is also a growing trend of home-based businesses since the COVID-19 era. Another trend is increasing diversity, where women’s representation in managerial positions is becoming important to investors. Social media commerce, talent challenges, customer experience, and sustainable environments are also current business trends.

These business trends also affect HR trends. Companies are now implementing hybrid working systems, allowing employees to work from home. There is also a demand for workers to engage in company programs to enhance employee experience. Diversity, equity, and inclusion have become focal points for companies. The demand for work-life balance from workers has increased, requiring companies to shift their mindset to maintain employees’ mental health and well-being. Recruitment now focuses on potential rather than just educational qualifications. Finally, human skills were the main topic discussed by Mr. Shauqi.

According to Mr. Shauqi, there are four types of skills needed in the coming years: problem-solving, self-management, working with people, and technology use and development. These skills are crucial for a worker’s future success.

“How we prepare our credentials and introduce ourselves to the industry needs to be done well in advance. For example, through social media like LinkedIn. Be cautious with social media, and use it to its fullest to enter the job market,” Mr. Shauqi advised the participants.

Mr. Shauqi then explained how to create a resume (CV). The first step is to summarize the applicant’s skills, competencies, and awards. Use specific keywords relevant to the job applied for. Arrange the education and work experience in chronological order. Lastly, mention any training or certifications obtained.

In the final session, Mr. Shauqi invited one of the participants to the stage for an interview simulation. In this session, Mr. Shauqi acted as the HRD interviewing a job applicant. He asked various questions for the participant to answer. To conclude the session, Mr. Shauqi provided tips on how to approach interviewers to improve the chances of being noticed by companies.

“I would like to thank PT Medco Energi Internasional for sharing their extensive knowledge at FTUI. The knowledge brought by Shauqi G. Aleyandra is very beneficial for our students who will soon be entering the workforce. This is essential preparation that students must consider. I hope the participants can make the best use of the knowledge provided,” said Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng., IPU, Dean of FTUI.
