SPE UI SC FTUI Representatives Win Three Awards at BOREYES 2025

Representatives from the SPE UI SC team, consisting of students from FTUI, have once again brought home a proud achievement at BOREYES 2025, hosted by Universitas Padjadjaran. This prestigious annual competition serves as a platform that fosters both technical and non-technical skills in petroleum engineering as well as innovation for the future sustainability of the energy industry.

In this event, three teams from FTUI successfully earned awards in three different categories:

Team Serendipity, consisting of Sheilamita Alya Putri (Bioprocess Engineering 2022), Fauzia Nur Rahmani (Chemical Engineering KKI 2022), and Aurelia Gunawan (Chemical Engineering 2022), won First Place in the Smart Competition category. This competition tested participants’ in-depth knowledge and quick thinking in answering questions related to sustainable energy and petroleum technology.

“This competition truly sharpened our quick thinking and deep understanding of sustainable energy issues. This victory is the result of hard work and an unwavering spirit of learning,” said Sheilamita Alya Putri, representing Team Serendipity.

Team Kukusan, represented by Muhammad Faerel Rizky Alifiansyah, Chiara Chantika Chairunisa, and Fadhil Rasyadan (all from Chemical Engineering 2023), won 1st Runner-Up in the Paper & Poster Competition with their project titled “Decarbonizing Natural Gas in Indonesia: Cost-Effective and Sustainable Emissions Adsorption Using Nitrogen-Doped Porous CO₂ Carbon from Sugarcane Bagasse.” The project proposed a natural gas decarbonization solution using eco-friendly materials derived from agricultural waste.

“We wanted to prove that decarbonization solutions can begin with something as simple as agricultural waste. This paper is not just an idea, but also a hope for a cleaner and more efficient energy future,” said Muhammad Faerel Rizky Alifiansyah, representing Team Kukusan.

Team Materallia Corrosiva, consisting of Sakha Farrel Kanindra Putra, Muhammad Zahri Sidiq, and Muhammad Brian Najib Syafei (Chemical Engineering 2023), achieved 2nd Runner-Up in the Business Case Competition. They offered a solution to optimize the Upflow Anaerobic Sludge Blanket (UASB) technology to process palm oil mill effluent into biogas, complemented with pH adjustment strategies and effluent recycling for cost efficiency and positive environmental impact.

“Through this business case, we learned not only from the technical side, but also how to align technological innovation with economic and environmental aspects. This has become an important lesson for us as future engineers who aim to make an impact,” said Sakha Farrel Kanindra Putra, representing Team Materallia Corrosiva.

“The achievements of FTUI students at BOREYES 2025 reflect the spirit of collaboration, innovation, and courage to present real solutions for the challenges of sustainable energy. We are proud of this dedication and outstanding accomplishment, which strengthens FTUI’s position as an institution that not only excels academically but also makes a real impact on society and the global industry,” said Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Dean of FTUI.

BOREYES 2025 serves as concrete proof that FTUI students possess superior capacity in addressing global energy challenges through innovation, applied research, and cross-disciplinary strategic thinking. These achievements also reaffirm FTUI’s commitment to nurturing a generation of engineers who are adaptive, creative, and solution-oriented.
