Strengthening Global Collaboration, UI Increases Collaboration with Two Leading Universities in America

Universitas Indonesia delegation returned to visit one of the best and oldest universities in the United States, the University of California Berkeley (UC Berkeley) to expand cooperation. Collaboration that will be continued in the future is collaboration in the Visiting Research Young Scholar program and the Doctoral Program (S3) for young lecturers from FTUI and the Faculty of Economics and Business (FEB) UI with the full support of the LPS (Deposit Guarantee Agency). Opportunities for cooperation were also established with Vanderbilt University during a working visit which was held on 16 – 24 May 2023.

Prof. Dr. err. nat. Abdul Haris (Vice Chancellor for Academic and Student Affairs), Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, ST., M.Eng. (Dean of the Faculty of Engineering), and Dr. Vishnu Juwono (Head of Bureau of Transformation, Risk Management and Evaluation Monitoring) received by the Director of International Partnership, College of Engineering UC Berkeley, Matthew Sherburne. The meeting was filled with discussions related to monitoring and evaluating research collaborations and educational collaboration opportunities for the doctoral program (Ph.D.).

“The commitment of the Universitas Indonesia to become a world-class university is proven by the realization of global collaboration with world-renowned universities, one of which is the University of California Berkeley (UC Berkeley) in the United States. The Visiting Research Young Scholar Program is a pilot project, the first collaboration between the UI Faculty of Engineering (FTUI) and the UC Berkeley School of Engineering as a manifestation of the cooperation agreement signed last year,” said Prof. Haris on the sidelines of his visit.

The three UI representatives also met students from the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia who are currently undergoing a Visiting Research Young Scholar program to conduct one year of research in the fields of Energy, Bioengineering and Biomedical Engineering with leading professors from UC Berkeley. This program aims to increase the research and research capacity of young researchers at UI and is fully supported by LPS (Deposit Guarantee Agency). In the future, this program will continue and be expanded to other research fields.

Apart from visiting UC Berkeley, the UI delegation also attended the 2023 QS Edu Data Summit, met with the Consulate General of the Republic of Indonesia in San Francisco and explored opportunities for international collaboration with several partner universities in the United States. One of the successful collaboration opportunities is with Vanderbilt University.

“FTUI and Vanderbilt University will start a collaboration related to training in the fields of technology commercialization, entrepreneurship, and intellectual property. Later, the students participating in this training pilot project will be directly guided by Dr. Yiorgos Kostoulas, who is one of the engineering management experts in America. This program also has the full support of the United States Embassy in Indonesia,” said Prof. Heri Hermansyah.

The UI delegation also attended the 2023 QS Edu Data Summit which educational leaders, academics and professionals from various countries attended. This international conference organized by Quacquarelli Symonds, a world-renowned higher education consulting company, is a forum for delegates from various universities worldwide to share ideas, the latest thoughts, and best practices in the world of higher education.

With active involvement in the 2023 QS Edu Data Summit and visits to partner universities, Universitas Indonesia shows its commitment to embracing global collaboration and continuously innovating in achieving higher education standards.
