Supporting the Implementation of Healthy Buildings in Indonesia, CSID FTUI Holds Seminar Series Healthy Buildings 2023

The Center for Sustainable Infrastructure Development, Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (CSID FTUI) held a Seminar Series with the topic Healthy Buildings: Exploring the Intersection of Technology, Health, and Architecture. This seminar was held in Makara Room 04 Smart Meeting Room (SMR) Dean Building Floor 1 FTUI, last Wednesday (17/05/23).

The Seminar Series was attended by two local speakers, FTUI alumni, namely the Principal Investigator of the Green Building Research Group TREC FTUI, Dr.-Ing. Ova Candra Dewi, S.T., M.Sc., and Director Yodaya Green Building Consultant, Yodi Danusastro, S.T., M.Sc. Also present at the event, the Head of the Interdisciplinary Engineering Education and Research Unit, Prof. Dr. Ir. Widodo Wahyu Purwanto, DEA., Professor of the Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering (DTSL) FTUI, Prof. Mohammed Ali Berawi, M.Eng.Sc., Ph.D., and students from Civil Engineering and Architecture FTUI.

Head of FTUI’s Engineering Interdisciplinary Education and Research Unit, Prof. Dr. Ir. Widodo Wahyu Purwanto, DEA., said in his remarks, “Hopefully with this Green and Healthy Building seminar we can welcome Indonesia’s Net Zero Energy and Sustainable Building, both in the commercial and household sectors. This issue is of course very interesting to continue to be researched at FTUI. Hopefully, this seminar can be an initiation and starting point for the development of research related to Green Building. It doesn’t just stop as a seminar but there is an implementation of the development of healthy buildings in Indonesia.”

Also present virtually, Professor of DTSL FTUI, Prof. Mohammed Ali Berawi, M.Eng.Sc., Ph.D. said, “Technological evolution in building construction is growing day by day. How can buildings adapt to nature so that they can utilize technology that creates a high level of effectiveness and efficiency so that Smart Building emerges. Many sources say that 80% of human time in a day is spent indoors. So, the question arises how to create a healthy building that can become a centre of activity in improving the quality of life of the community.”

The first material presentation was delivered by the Principal Investigator of the Green Building Research Group TREC FTUI, Dr.-Ing. Ova Candra Dewi, S.T. Dr. Ova presented the Healthy Building concept. “Healthy Building itself is a building concept that focuses on the level of health and productivity of its users. Healthy Building has a well-known principle as The 9 Foundation of a Healthy Building which was initiated by Dr. Joseph Allen’s team from Harvard University, namely Air Quality, Dust and Pests, Lighting and Views, Moisture, Noise, Safety and Security, Thermal Health, Ventilation and Water Quality.”

The material presentation was continued by Director Yodaya Green Building Consultant, Yodi Danusastro, S.T., M.Sc, discussing Green Building Standards based on Well and Fitwell Standards. “For Well Standards, prioritizing health through concepts and innovations, namely Air, Water, Nourishment, Light, Movement, Thermal Comfort, Sound, Materials, Mind, and Community. Meanwhile, Fitwell Standards address a wide range of health and behavioural risks to improve building quality. Each of these strategies has strengths and impacts on the health of residents.”

After the material presentation session, the participants actively asked about the material presented regarding the implementation of Green and Healthy Building in Indonesia. Through the Seminar Series on Green and Healthy Building, it is hoped that it can be a means of triggering and sparking enthusiasm to create and develop healthy building projects in Indonesia.

Construction of buildings that support the sustainability and sustainability of the surrounding nature by utilizing technology implementing the principles of green building construction or Green Building which also supports the points of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), such as point 11 (Sustainable Cities and Communities) and 13th (Climate Action).
