A student team from the Department of Chemical Engineering (DTK), Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) secured second place at the prestigious 23rd PetroBowl Global Championship, held on September 23, 2024, at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans, United States. The four 2021 cohort students were Al Azhari Siregar, Deni Suryo Pratama, Marley Susilo, and Vincent Emmanuel.
Their achievement was praised by Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU, Dean of FTUI. “The accomplishment of the UI PetroBowl Team 2024 is a source of pride and inspiration. This success not only marks an individual achievement but is also the result of hard work and solid collaboration among the team members,” said Prof. Heri.
He further added that this achievement proves that FTUI has great potential in producing young generations ready to compete internationally. “Amid increasing challenges and fierce competition, this achievement serves as a symbol of hope and motivation for other students to continue innovating and excelling,” he continued.
The students, mentored by Dr. Bambang Heru Susanto, S.T., M.T., Head of the Department of Chemical Engineering FTUI, prepared intensively. They received both academic and strategic support, covering in-depth knowledge of petroleum engineering and the latest trends in the oil and gas industry. This preparation process was one of the keys to their success.
Before reaching the finals in New Orleans, the UI PetroBowl Team 2024 demonstrated outstanding performance at the PetroBowl Asia Pacific & Australia Regional Qualifier, held from July 25-27, 2024, in Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam. They emerged as the first-place winners in the regional qualifier, earning a ticket to the global competition.
At the PetroBowl Global Championship, they competed against 32 teams from six different regions, including top teams from various countries. The competition, organized by the Society of Petroleum Engineers (SPE), tested students’ knowledge of the energy industry in a quiz-bowl format, covering topics ranging from technical aspects to current issues in the oil and gas sector.
One of the team members, Al Azhari Siregar, explained that the competition provided deep insights into the challenges and developments in the global energy industry. “This experience not only enriched our knowledge but also honed our critical thinking and teamwork skills, which are essential for the professional world,” said Azhari.
This remarkable achievement places Universitas Indonesia as one of the leading educational institutions capable of competing on the global stage, particularly in the fields of engineering and energy.
