PT Garuda Indonesia Shares Experience of Going Through the COVID-19 Pandemic with FTUI Students

The COVID-19 pandemic has had an impact on various aspects of life, one of which has shaken the aviation industry. There were 64 airlines in the world that stopped operating. 81 million livelihoods in the Asia Pacific disappeared. 300 billion dollars of aviation revenue is lost every year. There are about 17 thousand aeroplanes unable to fly. For PT Garuda Indonesia, the pandemic has caused a significant decline in passenger numbers, from 1.6 million passengers per month to 25 thousand.

This was conveyed by Ade R. Susardi, Director of Services and Commerce of Garuda Indonesia at a guest lecture at the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (12/09). In the guest lecture entitled “Lead the Survival Through Turbulence, Lesson Learned from Garuda Indonesia”, Ade shared PT Garuda Indonesia’s experiences and strategies through one of the worst times in the aviation world.

In his presentation on Lead the Survival Through Turbulence, Lesson Learned from Garuda Indonesia, Ade said that the pandemic made PT Garuda Indonesia continue to strive to provide the best service through various strategies to continue to be a trusted airline for the community and finally be able to get through this critical period.

“Garuda Indonesia’s various strategies are summarized in five keywords, namely turning crisis into opportunity, managing risk and decision making, prudent policy for sustainability, leadership perspective, and service consistency. Some of these things are the key to Garuda Indonesia’s success in facing various challenges, especially through the crisis during the Covid-19 Pandemic,” Ade said.

Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah. S.T., M.Eng., IPU, gave his response regarding this public lecture activity, “The presentation from PT Garuda regarding the strategy to survive and continue to provide the best service during a pandemic can be a solution learning when in the industrial world. How to survive in difficult times, of course, being consistent in providing the best service is the key to Garuda’s success in surviving and remaining the airline of choice for the community.”

Held in room K.301, this public lecture is part of the capita selecta course of the Industrial Engineering department. The Head of the Industrial Engineering Department, Dr. Komarudin, ST, M.Eng, acted as the moderator in this guest lecture. Also present were the Vice Dean for Resources, Ventures and General Administration of FTUI, Prof. Ir. Mahmud Sudibandriyo, M.Sc., Ph.D. and professor of the Department of Industrial Engineering FTUI, Prof. Dr. Ir. Teuku Yuri M. Zagloel, M.Eng. Sc.

In his speech, Prof. Mahmud Sudibandriyo said, “Hopefully this lecture will benefit us, especially students who will enter the world after college, and can strengthen the relationship between the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia and PT Garuda Indonesia.”
