Fakultas Teknik Universitas Indonesia (FTUI) welcomed a delegation from Monash University to discuss opportunities to strengthen academic and research collaboration with the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering (DTMM) FTUI. Held on Wednesday, August 12, at the PAF Building Meeting Room, FTUI, the meeting served as a forum to explore various forms of collaboration, ranging from student mobility to joint research development in the fields of metallurgical and materials engineering.
The meeting was attended by an FTUI delegation comprising Ir. Andyka Kusuma, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., Associate Dean for International Partnerships and Education; Dr. Ahmad Zakiyuddin, S.T., M.Eng., Head of the Department of Metallurgical and Materials Engineering; and Siti Nurandini Winduningtyas, Coordinator for International Partnerships. Monash University was represented by Prof. Julie Karel, Associate Professor in the Department of Materials Science and Engineering.
Dean of FTUI, Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., emphasized that FTUI continues to promote international partnerships that provide tangible benefits for the development of education, research, and students’ academic experiences.
“FTUI is very open to developing collaboration with Monash University, particularly in strengthening cooperation in education and research. We hope that this discussion can be followed up with concrete programs, including student mobility, internships, and joint research, so that they can benefit both institutions while expanding FTUI’s international network,” said Prof. Kemas.
One of the key topics discussed was the potential for visiting student and internship student programs. Through these schemes, Monash University students would have the opportunity to participate in academic activities and gain relevant industry experience at FTUI and its industry partners. Internship opportunities in collaboration with industry are also available to students enrolled at Monash University, particularly during the summer period, with opportunities to earn academic credit as well as receive support in the form of paid internships.
The meeting also explored potential research collaboration between Monash University and DTMM FTUI, particularly in several areas relevant to industry needs. The identified research topics included industrial corrosion for mining, biomaterials, tissue engineering, biosensor applications, additive manufacturing, and polymers. These discussions opened opportunities for both institutions to develop joint research that addresses technological development needs while contributing to solutions for challenges in various industrial sectors.
The potential collaboration is supported by the diverse research areas developed by DTMM FTUI, including computational engineering, casting and solidification, metallurgical and manufacturing engineering, nanomaterial engineering, composite materials, polymer technology, and corrosion protection. These areas provide a foundation for identifying research topics that can be further developed through collaboration between DTMM FTUI and Monash University.
As a follow-up to the meeting, both parties discussed opportunities to develop joint research collaborations in the specific areas that had been identified. In addition to research cooperation, follow-up plans also include exploring an accelerated master’s program, which is expected to expand opportunities for postgraduate education and academic mobility between the two institutions.
The meeting marked an initial step toward strengthening academic relations between FTUI, particularly DTMM, and Monash University. Through the development of student mobility and internship programs, research collaboration, and postgraduate education opportunities, the partnership between the two institutions is expected to benefit students and academics while advancing research and innovation in metallurgical and materials engineering.
