On Thursday (04/18), the Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), in collaboration with the Technical University of Munich (TUM), held a TUM Asia Info Session along with information about scholarships provided by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD). The event featured two main speakers, Dr.-Ing. Ali Bawono, PMP, Senior Researcher and Lecturer at the Faculty of Rail, Transport, & Logistics TUM Asia, and La Budza, Program Officer for DAAD Scholarships and Alumni in Jakarta.
“The scholarships available at TUM through the DAAD scholarship are for the Rail, Transports and Logistics; Aerospace Engineering; Green Electronics; Integrated Circuit Design; and Industrial Chemistry programs. One of the excellent advantages of TUM is that its alumni find it relatively easy to secure employment after graduation. Many DAAD scholarship alumni from UI are currently working in international and multinational companies, not only in Europe but also in Singapore and several other countries,” explained Ali Bawono.
The Technical University of Munich (TUM), established in 1868, is renowned as one of the best technical universities in Europe. TUM was named the best campus in Germany according to the QS World University Ranking 2024. With the motto “Talents Are Our Assets, Reputation Is Our Return,” TUM also ranks 13th in Global University Employability according to THE World University Ranking 2023. TUM is known as an entrepreneurial university that nurtures talent and creates value for society through its network of partners in research and industry. With seven faculties and over 50,000 students, TUM has produced 18 Nobel laureates since its inception.
The session continued with an explanation from La Budza about the DAAD Scholarship. “The DAAD scholarship is available for all levels of education, from undergraduate to post-doc. DAAD has 60 offices worldwide and receives funding from the German government and the European Union. To date, DAAD has funded more than 800 students. Speaking of Germany, some of the advantages of this country include its universities with good reputations globally, comprehensive research institutes, and no tuition fees charged to students,” she explained.
La Budza also explained about scholarships specifically for postgraduate studies. The DAAD PhD scholarships provide research grants for 12 or 24 months in Germany for students completing their PhD programs in Indonesia. In addition, for those who want to pursue a Master’s degree, DAAD provides a living allowance of 934 Euros, while for PhD candidates, they receive 1300 Euros. Scholarship recipients are also eligible to apply for insurance, travel allowances, and housing subsidies upon arrival in Germany.
FTUI Dean, Prof. Dr. Ir. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU., stated, “The collaboration between FTUI and TUM in organizing the Info Session and discussing DAAD scholarship opportunities is a form of support for FTUI students interested in continuing their studies in Germany. I hope that students can make the most of this opportunity to develop themselves and contribute at the global level.”
