FTUI Students Create I-GREFIMS: National Electricity Monitoring System

Living without electricity must be difficult. However, it turns out that in Indonesia there are still areas that do not have electricity. Very sad isn’t it? It is possible that from areas that have not yet been electrified, there are millions of dreams of sons and daughters of the regions whose movements have been limited because they have not yet had electricity.

To overcome this, Indonesia as a country with a population of productive age and the majority of which are young people has the potential to provide benefits and good impacts for sustainable development in Indonesia in this case related to ensuring access to electricity for all Indonesian people.

Concerning sustainable development, one of the target objectives of the 7th point of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) is ensuring access to affordable clean energy in all parts of the world, including in Indonesia. In realizing this target, one of the implementations is the realization of a 100% national electrification ratio.

Departing from this problem, as a young generation Priscilla Tiffany, a 2021 class student of the Environmental Engineering Study Program Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, University of Indonesia (DTSL FTUI) initiated a system called the Integrated Green Electrification Monitoring System (I-GREFIMS) which is projected to become a series system to accommodate the potential of the younger generation by achieving the goal of access to clean and affordable energy throughout Indonesia.

“The idea of ​​I-GREFIMS arose from a great desire to be able to accommodate the potential of the younger generation in achieving clean and affordable energy. This is because so far the forum for developing the potential of the younger generation is still very minimal. With the existence of I-GREFIMS, it opens opportunities for every young generation to channel their innovations in achieving the target of realizing one or several regions according to their relevance,” said Tiffany.

The advantage of the I-GREFIMS program is the sending of energy agents or what is known as “GEN-G” to areas that are still not electrified. Delivery of GEN-G to regions in Indonesia has its mechanism. The GEN-G will later be selected according to the criteria of GEN-G who are competent and have knowledge of electrification and EBT. Later on, GEN-G in each region is required to provide periodic news through the I-GREFIMS website.

I-GREFIMS has another advantage, namely an inclusive information centre channel in the form of a website so that people are more sensitive to news about energy development in Indonesia. Tiffany said on this website there are several features, such as a News feature which contains articles about energy development in Indonesia which are updated regularly, the GEN-G News feature which contains the introduction of GEN-G annually and information on GEN-G recruitment, the Map feature which contains detailed information on areas that are still in the process of realization, areas that have reached the target of realization, and areas whose realization process is pending, the Articles of Regions feature contains articles about local conditions, the Targets and Timeline feature contains plans for the realization of each region based on projected time, and the Research Info feature contains information related to functions I-GREFIMS as an inclusive innovation forum for the nation’s children.

Dean of FTUI, Prof. Dr. Heri Hermansyah, S.T., M.Eng., IPU., said “I-GREFIMS can be an innovative medium which, if realized, can certainly be an impactful contribution from FTUI students to the progress of Indonesia’s development, especially in achieving the goal of 100% national electrification. It is hoped that other FTUI students will present innovative ideas, especially regarding clean energy and handling Indonesia’s climate, as part of FTUI’s efforts to support SDGs 2030,” he said.

Through the implementation of I-GREFIMS, it is hoped that this system can become a useful platform with sustainable values ​​of innovation, inclusivity and effectiveness for the advancement of Indonesia’s development.
