The Faculty of Engineering, Universitas Indonesia (FTUI), continues to strengthen the role of higher education institutions in advancing the internationalization of education, research development, and the downstream commercialization of innovation through collaboration with international partners and industry. This commitment is realized through the establishment of the Indonesia–China Center for Education, Science, and Technology (ICCEST), a platform for collaboration between Indonesia and China in the fields of education, science, and technology.
The series of activities began with FTUI’s meeting with the Ministry of Higher Education, Science, and Technology (Kemdiktisaintek) on September 2, 2026. The meeting discussed efforts to strengthen the internationalization of higher education in Indonesia through collaboration and partnerships with international partners, as well as to enhance cooperation between universities and industry to accelerate the downstream commercialization of research outcomes.
The collaboration was further strengthened through the formal signing and inauguration of ICCEST as part of the Opening of the National Seminar, themed “Engineering Innovations for Sustainable Industry and Future Society,” on September 3, 2026. The center is expected to serve as a strategic platform for expanding cooperation in education, joint research, talent exchange, and technology development and transfer between Indonesia and China.
Minister of Higher Education, Science, and Technology of the Republic of Indonesia, Prof. Brian Yuliarto, S.T., M.Eng., Ph.D., stated that the establishment of ICCEST is aligned with Indonesia’s need to strengthen its national human resource and technological capabilities. He noted that challenges such as research commercialization, electric vehicles, the energy transition, and artificial intelligence require human resources who are not only capable of utilizing technology, but also able to master and develop it.
“I warmly welcome the establishment of the Indonesia–China Center for Education, Science, and Technology, or ICCEST. I hope ICCEST will serve as a tangible platform for strengthening joint research, talent exchange, and technology transfer between Indonesia and China,” said Prof. Brian.
Furthermore, Prof. Brian emphasized that international cooperation should generate long-term impacts on Indonesia’s capacity building.
“International cooperation must not stop at investment. Every technology investment must leave Indonesia with greater capacity: better-equipped engineers, stronger laboratories, and the ability of our nation to develop its own technologies,” he stated.
Echoing this perspective, Dean of FTUI, Prof. Kemas Ridwan Kurniawan, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., emphasized that international collaboration should be directed toward partnerships that generate tangible benefits for education, research, and industry. He noted that the establishment of ICCEST represents part of FTUI’s efforts to expand its global network while strengthening an innovation ecosystem that is connected to industry needs.
“We want to build international collaborations that not only expand our network, but also generate tangible impacts. Through ICCEST, we hope that educational and research collaborations can develop into innovations that can be utilized by industry and society, while simultaneously strengthening the capacity of Indonesia’s talent,” said Prof. Kemas.
Through ICCEST, FTUI is committed to making international collaboration an integral part of strengthening higher education with a global orientation and meaningful impact. Synergy among higher education institutions, government, international partners, and industry is expected to accelerate the development of highly skilled talent and technological innovations that support industrial needs and sustainable development in Indonesia.
